Board of Overseers
The Board of Overseers of the Weill Cornell Medical College and Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences has authority vested under the "Resolution Regarding Governance" approved by the Board of Trustees of Cornell University. The Overseers have responsibility for the general supervision of the programs and operations of the Medical College and Graduate School. Among other responsibilities, the Board oversees academic, financial and other program planning, approves domestic and global affiliations, oversees all clinical, research and administrative facilities, and approves faculty appointments to tenure and endowed professorships.
The Board of Overseers consists of 70 voting members, including 50 Public members elected by the Board. In addition, the Cornell Board of Trustees elects 10 members and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital elects 2 members. Weill Cornell students and faculty also elect representatives to serve on the board. Five ex officio members – the President of the University, the Chair of the Board of Trustees, the Provost for Medical Affairs/Dean of the Medical College, the Dean of the Graduate School, and the President of the Medical College Alumni Association -- also have voting privileges. The full board meets four times a year, as does the Executive Committee. Other Overseer committees convene throughout the year.
The Office of the Secretary of the Medical College
The Office of the Secretary is housed within the Office of University Counsel. The Secretary's Office is responsible for the governance matters involving the Overseers and maintains the official records of the proceedings of Overseer meetings. James R. Kahn, in addition to serving as Deputy University Counsel, is Secretary of the Medical College. On a day-to-day basis, much of the Overseer support is provided by L. Jeanie Faulkner, Assistant Secretary, and by Janet Miller, Sr. Administrative Aide.
