Course Goals
The goal of this clerkship is to provide students with the basic knowledge that is needed to enter the major clerkships with some degree of comfort.
Course Objectives
By the end of the Introductory Clerkship the student should be able to:
- Write and organize an admission note that would be suitable
for a hospital chart
- Write and organize a progress note that would be suitable
for a hospital chart
- Present a patient as one would on rounds in the hospital
- Read and interpret electrocardiograms
- Interpret abnormal laboratory values in a variety of clinical
scenarios
- Be credentialed in venipuncture
- Understand basic intravenous fluid management
- Understand the management of common clinical problems
- Be comfortable in the hospital environment
Course Description
The Introductory clerkship is a 3 week course taken at the beginning of the third year immediately prior to entering the clinical clerkships. The course is taught in lecture and small group format. There is an inpatient component to the course in which 3 afternoons a week are spent in a network hospitals where students will see hospitalized patients, write notes and present them to a tutor.
Student Responsibilities
In the Introductory clerkship the student responsibilities include:
- Attending and participating in all classes and small group sessions.
- Attending and participating in all inpatient sessions.
- Writing at least one admission note and one progress note.
Didactic Sessions
Most of the course is taught in lecture format followed by small group case discussions. Students will also participate in small group tutorials with their inpatient preceptor.
Evaluation and Examinations
Each student will be given a take home exam consisting of multiple-choice questions at the end of the course.
Grading
The course is graded on a pass-fail basis. There is no honors grade for this course.
