Tutor Groups

On the general medicine services at NYPH, you will be assigned a tutor, who is a physician and a member of the faculty. Tutors are chosen for their interest and skill in teaching. Students meet with the tutor in groups of 3-5. Tutor groups meet 2-3 times weekly, typically 4-5 PM on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Your tutor may wish to adjust these times.

The activities of the tutor groups include:
  • Case discussion: students describe their patients, and discussion ensues

  • Formal case presentation: students present the complete history and physical, followed by a summary, assessment, and plan. Each student will present a case formally at least once in each month. Please do not read the case; referring to notes is acceptable.

  • Case write-ups: Students will submit a complete case write-up 3 times during each block. Like the formal case presentations, the write-ups include a complete history and physical examination but emphasize the summary, assessment, and plan. Please upload your write-ups to Angel Learning Systems to allow us to review them.

  • Topic discussion: an opportunity to review topics in internal medicine.

  • You will sometimes see the patients at bedside, together with the tutor. Please ask the patient first if this is OK.
